Job Opportunity: Director – Durban Natural Science Museum
The Durban Natural Science Museum (DNSM) is a small museum with a big mission: to acquire and disseminate knowledge about the Earth, its history, and life on Earth, both past and present. To aid in this quest, the DNSM is seeking to appoint a new Director (please download this PDF for more information).
Funded by the eThekwini Municipality, the position is in the Recreation and Parks Directorate.
The Director will manage the key performance areas associated with the Natural Science Museum through the development of research and acquisition plans an alignment of public relations and educational strategies to increase awareness and interest.
Applicants must have:
- Master of Science (NQF9) in Natural Science or Zoology (PhD preferred)
- Valid motor vehicle driving license
- 6 years relevant experience in Museology and Natural Science / Zoology
- including at least 2 years experience at managerial level
Key Responsibility Areas include (among others):
- directing objective setting and alignment of the Natural Science Museums within the region
- managing outcomes associated with utilization, productivity and personnel performance at the DNSM
- developing, implementing and monitoring procedures, systems and controls associated with the operations and functions of the Natural Science Museums within the region
- managing the key performance areas associated with creating interest and awareness of the DNSM collections and research locally and internationally
- directing applications and processes associated with studying and exhibition of the Natural Science collection at the Museum
Key competencies include:
- Planning, organisational awareness and project management
- use of technology, data processing and data analysis
- change readiness and a service delivery orientation
- team orientation, direction setting and communication
