Invite | Global Genome Biodiversity Network 2023 Conference – October 2023

The Global Genome Biodiversity Network 2023 conference expects to gather academic institutions and representatives of the private and public sectors from around the world, considering members and non-members of the GGBN community who are interested in preserving and studying biodiversity. And that certainly includes members of the Biodiversity Biobanks South Africa (BBSA) community.

The BBSA provides a coordinating structure across several of South Africa’s biodiversity biobanks. And as GGBN members, the BBSA and its institutions can (among other things):

  • Explore and contribute to the GGBN Document Library, a developing knowledge exchange platform containing resources pertaining to biobank management, curation and research protocols, information and data management/data sharing, and more..
  • Consult and join the GGBN Task Forces addressing Biobank Procedures, Data Standards, Policies, Communications and Outreach, and the Document Library.
  • Join the awards programme, contribute samples, and attend conferences, such as the GGBN’s 4th International Conference on Biodiversity Biobanking.

The conference will take place in Aguascalientes, Mexico, from October 17th to 20th, 2023, and will be hosted by the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes (see location here). The conference will focus on a wide array of topics, from basic databasing processes to environmental specimens and data analysis (sessions and workshops) and will include a discussion session on where we should head in the immediate future to reach GGBN’s goals.

What are biodiversity biobanks?

Biodiversity biobanks are repositories of biologically relevant resources, including reproductive tissues such as seeds, eggs and sperm, other tissues including blood, DNA extracts, microbial cultures (active and dormant), and environmental samples containing biological communities….
