BBSA Community Registration & Funding | Joint Biobanking Conference 2025

As you know, the Biodiversity Biobanks South Africa (BBSA) is co-hosting the GGBN / ISBER Joint Biobanking Conference 2025 from 29 September to 3 October 2025 – and we’d like to make this the biggest biodiversity biobanking conference in Africa.

To that end, we’d like to invite members of the BBSA Community to participate as attendees and presenters – and we have made funding available to help make that possible. The BBSA will be able to cover certain costs for at least one individual from each member institution.

For biobanks outside of the Western Cape, those would include:

  • Registration costs;
  • Travel funding; and
  • Accommodation costs.

For biobanks based in the Western Cape, travel and accommodation costs will not be covered. And for all biobanks, any extras (including icebreakers and excursions) will have to be covered by the attendee’s own institution.

Please Note: Preference will be given to those who are presenting at the Joint Conference – so if you’re interested, please submit your abstracts by 31 July 2025.

We will be following up shortly with those institutions and individuals who have previously expressed interest in attending the conference to inquire about travel arrangements and more, and will send out a communication regarding the final funding allocation soon.

In the meantime, if there’s anything you’d like to inquire about or let us know, contact us at info@bbsa.org.za or n.kruger@sanbi.org.za and we’ll see what we can do.

Joint Biobanking Conference 2025

The Biobanks Africa Conference 2025, a joint effort by the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN), International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), will be held at the spectacular Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, South Africa, from 29 September – 3 October 2025.

With this year’s conference theme, “Where worlds align: biodiversity and human biobanks. Same, but different”, we’re bringing together experts in human and biodiversity biobanking to talk shop, share solutions and discuss future efforts.

What are biodiversity biobanks?

Biodiversity biobanks are repositories of biologically relevant resources, including reproductive tissues such as seeds, eggs and sperm, other tissues including blood, DNA extracts, microbial cultures (active and dormant), and environmental samples containing biological communities….
